What is Reverse T3 Syndrome in Thyroid Disorders?

Dr. Spurlock Explains Reverse T3 Syndrome

Hashimoto'sReverse T3 should only be present in one situation: starvation. The most common cause of Reverse T3 is wheat consumption, which results in intestinal damage. Here’s how it works:

  • When wheat damages your intestine, you won’t absorb nutrients correctly.
  • When you don’t absorb nutrients, your body thinks you’re “starving.”
  • It then shuts down thyroid functioning so you can survive long enough to find food.
T4 breaks down in the liver into either T3 or Reverse T3. Reverse T3 sits in the T3 receptor site but does nothing, effectively shutting down T3 functioning. The receptor sites are blocked, and the remaining T3 floats along in the bloodstream at higher-than-normal levels and aggravates the heart. You may even see tachycardia syndrome with this.

Wheat can also continue this damage and cause Celiac Disease and Leaky Gut Syndrome. If you have a genetic predisposition for Grave’s Disease or Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, Leaky Gut Syndrome can worsen and trigger these autoimmune disorders.

The treatment for Reverse T3 Syndrome is a pure T3 product, such as Cytomel (liothyronine) or T3 TR, from a compounding pharmacy. Here’s why this works so well:
  • Pure T3 will shut down TSH and T4 production, which shuts down Reverse T3 production.
  • With Reverse T3 shut down, the receptor sites become available again.
  • T3 can enter the receptor site and begin working normally again, restoring normal thyroid functioning.

Our providers use a functional or integrative approach and understand Reverse T3 Syndrome so that you can receive the correct treatment protocol.

Thyroid Fundamentals

The thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped organ at the front of your neck. Though it only produces one teaspoon of thyroid hormone per year, it is critical for your overall health and drives the metabolic rate of every cell in your body.

The thyroid is a master hormone. It regulates temperature, metabolism, and cerebral function. It’s a massive contributor to energy levels and the body’s ability to maintain a constant temperature.

Thyroid hormone:

  • helps remove cellular waste,
  • increases fat breakdown,
  • improves hair growth on the scalp and eyebrows,
  • reduces cholesterol levels and body weight, and
  • is vital in the prevention of cognitive deterioration.

And the thyroid hormone is critical for fertility in women. Many women who go through expensive infertility treatments simply need thyroid hormone replacement.

Think of the thyroid hormone as the overseer of the body, telling all the other organs to get to work!

Thyroid Testing at Renewed Vitality

Most people who come in to see us have varying combinations and severity levels of symptoms related to a malfunctioning thyroid. Here at Renewed Vitality, Dr. Spurlock and his Nurse Practitioners perform a thorough panel of tests to examine every aspect of thyroid hormone production and utilization in the body.

You may have taken a thyroid test before and been told that your thyroid levels were “normal.” Yet, if you still have symptoms, come to see us for testing.

Our tests are much more thorough than most. And we don’t use antiquated systems to read the results, as is common in the medical industry. The reason for this is that most providers only test your TSH and possibly T4. This type of testing won’t give you a comprehensive look at your thyroid, and you may be treated incorrectly. When this happens, you may be on the wrong thyroid medication, and you won’t feel any better.

We always run a complete thyroid panel to include:

  • TSH
  • T4
  • T3
  • Reverse T3
  • Antibodies (which would indicate Hashimoto’s Disease, an autoimmune disorder)
